How to Check AI Agent Work

General GenAIAI agentsWorkflows

Checking an agent's work is a specific skill, not a formality. Pick the one thing that would be obviously wrong and check only that, the way you glance at a bill before paying rather than re-adding every line.

People tend to either trust an agent's output completely or redo it from scratch to be sure. Both cost you the entire point of using an agent.

Two ways people waste the entire point

Trusting everything means a wrong number or an invented name goes out under your name. Redoing everything from scratch means you spent the agent's time and yours. Neither is checking, they're both avoiding it.

Pick the one obviously-wrong thing

A number that should be a real number. A name that should match a real customer. A date that should be in the future, not the past. One clear check, done fast, catches most of what actually goes wrong.

Build the check before you hand anything over

If you can name the one-minute check before you delegate the job, the job fits an agent. If you can't think of a fast check, that's not a sign the job is wrong for an agent, it's a sign you haven't built the check yet.

How do you verify AI agent output without redoing the work?

Pick the one thing that would be obviously wrong if the job failed, a number, a name, a date, and check only that. Full re-verification costs you the time the agent was supposed to save.

What's the difference between trusting AI output and checking it?

Trusting means accepting everything with no verification. Checking means confirming one specific, obviously-wrong-if-broken detail. Redoing the whole job from scratch isn't checking either, it's duplicating the work.

How do I know if a task is a good fit for an agent?

If you can name a check that takes under a minute, it's a good fit. If you can't think of a fast check, build one before you hand the job over rather than concluding the job doesn't fit.
