Triggers: What Starts an Agent When You Don't
A trigger is what starts an agent without you asking: a time, an event, an email landing, a file appearing. If you have to open the app and ask every time, that is a shortcut, not autonomy. The trigger is what turns instructions and tools into something that runs on its own.
Of the three things that make an agent, this is the one people skip, and skipping it is what leaves a good setup permanently dependent on someone remembering to use it.

What counts as a trigger
Not a button. A button is you asking, with fewer keystrokes.
A real trigger is an event in the world: a time of day, an invoice arriving, a form submission, a file appearing in a folder, a status changing in a system you already use. Something that happens whether or not you are thinking about it.
That distinction sounds pedantic until you notice what it predicts. Work that needs you to start it stops when you are busy, which is exactly when you needed it most.
The test
Ask what starts it. If the honest answer is "I do," you have a tool, and there is nothing wrong with that. If the answer is a time or an event, you have something running on its own.
Why this is the piece that gets skipped
Instructions are satisfying to write. Tools are exciting to connect. Triggers are plumbing, and plumbing does not demo well.
They are also the part that requires a decision you might not want to make: agreeing that something will happen without you seeing it first. That is a real question about oversight, and it belongs to the workflow rather than the whole company.
